We Must Ask 03-28-23

Good morning. Some years ago, there was a television commercial that I found rather cute, perhaps because it struck at the heart of being a dad.

The situation was a little boy, maybe 6 or 7, repeatedly asking his dad for things. I don’t remember exactly what those things were, but it went something like this: “Daddy, can I have a cookie?” “No, it’s too close to dinner time.” “Daddy, can I have St. Bernard dog?” “No, those are huge and it wouldn’t work for us.” “Daddy, can I have a flame thrower?” “No! I don’t want to even think about that!” “Daddy, can we go to McDonalds?” “No…wait a minute, McDonald’s? Why yes, yes we can go to McDonalds!” The dad was obviously overjoyed that he could finally answer “yes” to the child he loved.

Without missing a beat the little boy asks “Can I drive?” The father’s head shakes in distress.

There is a verse in the letter of James that I would like to bring into our attention today: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5

Can you imagine asking God for something more functional, or necessary, or precious? “Please, God, I am having a difficult time understanding what is happening in my life right now. Please, Father, may I be blessed with your wisdom?” James tells us that when we ask this of the Father He will not think of the request in any negative way, but will answer, “Yes! Yes, my child, you may be blessed with wisdom!”

Do you need special wisdom today? Perhaps the better question might be “Is there any day of your life when you do not need to be blessed with God’s wisdom?”

We need to ask, and we need to ask faithfully and without doubting (James 1:6). Your loving heavenly Father will be delighted to share with you His wisdom, and it will His blessing upon you.
