Good morning, and a very special prayer of blessing lifted to our Father God for our mothers!
We easily think of our creator as our “Father” God. Jesus called Him Father, and since we are described as “joint heirs with Jesus” and as God’s children, calling Him Father seems natural and correct.
Most of the time children run to Mom for comfort. For through her kindness, forgiveness, and never-ending compassion, we receive what we need in moments of pain, trial, or insecurity. Each of these characteristics are used in describing God.
Have you considered the scriptures that speak of God in ways that are reflective of a Mother’s heart and love? They are certainly present.
In Matthew 23:37 Jesus laments over Jerusalem and shares God’s voice: “…How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings…”
How could God reference Himself as a protective mother, unless He’d poured His compassionate nature into the mother’s heart? His maternal temperament continues: “…He will rejoice over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.” Zephaniah 3:17
“Quiet in His love,” duplicates the tender moments between mother and child, referencing the child being fully content and simply enjoying the closeness of its mother. The child wants nothing more than its mother’s presence. It’s a time of quiet love, the child drawing powerful strength from her proximity alone.
Again, we see His mothering side in Isaiah 49.14-15: But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” “Can a woman forget her nursing child,
that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.
Zion, the reference to Jerusalem and God’s people, cries out that God has forgotten them. The truth is that God is using circumstances to discipline them and to call his children back to His love. God says that even if it were possible for a mother to forget the child she is nursing, that if her love for the child would be over and her compassion ended, God will never forget His children.
Who better than the Designer of mothers to explain this nurturing side of Himself? The name of God, Jehovah Jireh, is the name that points to our nourishing and loving God.
Simply stated, He is our Father God, but clearly with a mother’s heart. Our God is waiting to wipe every tear; to sit up with us through the difficult night. He is anxious to listen to our troubles—solving them while we are yet speaking.
The mother’s heart is best defined by her unselfish generosity in ongoing, unconditional Love. Thank you, Moms, for letting us feel God’s love radiate through you.
May God bless our mothers not only on this special day, but throughout every day and season. We love you!
Vern
