The Source 04-03-23

Good morning.

I have mentioned before growing up not far from the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River. At that point of beginning, it doesn’t look all that mighty. Barely a creek, only a few yards wide, but that humble stream is the source of the great river.

Jesus is the source of Living Water. He said to the Samaritan woman at the well, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”John 4:10

We read that verse and we nod in agreement, “Yes, Jesus is the source, the One who gives living water.”

But a few chapters later in John’s gospel we read this: Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”Now he said this about the Spirit, that those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.John 7:38-39

Jesus has now been glorified. The blessing of the Holy Spirit is fulfilled in believers, for Jesus promised His living presence within each of us in the person of the Holy Spirit of God.

Therefore, Jesus says “out of our hearts (the hearts of believers) will flow rivers of living water.”

The Holy Spirit of God is like a river of life flowing out to the world, and He flows to our world from His place of residence, our hearts.

Let the river flow today. Let this thirsty world be blessed and refreshed by the river of God, who is the Holy Spirit as He flows from our hearts today. Above all, never dam up the river of life flowing from you.
