The Long and the Short of It 06-21-2023

Good morning. Welcome to the longest day of 2023. Our summer solstice will occur today at 9:57 am. You may recall the last winter solstice of December 21, 2022, 9:27 pm, the shortest day of our past year. Today, we will have about 16 hours between dawn and sunset, while on December 21 we had less than 9 hours.

Personally, I prefer the longer days. I enjoy the extended daylight, the greater opportunity to be outside to enjoy the sunshine.

However, the longest day and the shortest both have the same 24 hours. Whether in sunlight or electric lighting we have the same number of hours, minutes, and seconds. Every day is determined by what we choose to accomplish within the span of those moments. Please consider these verses of scripture to remind us of the worthy calling each day brings:

But encourage one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:13

Be careful how you live. Don’t live like a fool, but as one who is wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Do not act thoughtlessly but seek to understand what the Lord wants you to do each day. Ephesians 5:15-17

Teach us, oh Lord, to correctly number our days, that we might gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

Walk in wisdom toward those outside of your faith, making the most of every opportunity. Colossians 4:5

This may be the day with most minutes between dawn and sunset, but the outcome of the day depends on our determination to live fruitfully in the moments God has provided.

Live well today. Enjoy the sunshine and be determined to make the most of the moments granted to you.
