The Indescribable 12-26-23

Good morning.

‘Tis the day after Christmas, and all through the land, people head out, yesterday’s gifts well in hand. We shuffle, and mumble, and get in the car, thankful that Walmart is not all that far. Gifts that were given were “just the wrong size”, so returns are required, and more stuff to buy. Off to our stores we will hurriedly head, moving with purpose, our feet made of lead. Our arms filled with gifts, all to take back, exchanging them now for new clothes from the rack. It is normal, expected, and everything’s fine, but oh, how I dread that standing in line!

There you go, a brand-new poem. I am sure you will cherish it always!

What could we give that would never be returned? No concerns over sizes, or colors, or stuff out of style? Perhaps:

Perhaps we could be more patient, kind, and compassionate: Put on, as God’s holy and beloved chosen ones, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Colossians 3:12

Perhaps we could forgive, letting go of the pain from some past wrong done to us: “If your brother or sister sins against you, you should correct them; and if they repent, forgive them.” Luke 17:3

Perhaps a merciful spirit is as needed as a forgiving one: Blessed are the merciful for they will receive mercy. Matthew 5:7

Perhaps a gentle answer when a shout would be expected: A soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir anger. Proverbs 15:1

Perhaps we could give goodness, even when something worse feels justified: Do not repay evil with evil, but set your thoughts upon doing what is honorable and right in the eyes of all around. Romans 12:17

Perhaps the greatest gift we can give is summed up with this command from Jesus: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. John 13:34

Perfect gifts that are never returned. Give them, receive them, enjoy them, and praise God for His indescribable gift!
