Good morning. There was a time when cities were recognized through their battlements. Every city was a target for enemies to attack and plunder. Most cities were therefore, throughout much of human history, built in secure locations with dependable defenses. When enemies were coming into an area the people would flock to the nearest city, for it was their stronghold. It was their place of safety, their place that was well defended.
Scripture, especially in the Psalms, uses that idea of a stronghold to refer to God. He is our place of safety. He is our place of refuge. He is where we should go when the enemy is coming. Please consider Psalm 62:5-8, which shares this truth:
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.
The enemy will almost certainly come for you today. After all, why should today be any different than other days? Our enemy rarely takes a day off from his attacks, his temptations, and his lies. Where will you run? To whom will you go for safety? To whom will you look to provide an adequate stronghold?
The Lord is our rock, our salvation, our fortress, our refuge. In Him we should place our trust at all times!
