Off to Battle, Led by the Choir? 05-07-23

Good morning. 2 Chronicles 20 is a wonderful portion of scripture to read, most especially if you ever feel that you are facing a situation that is beyond your control or abilities. The situation in 2 Chronicles 20 was this:

Jehoshaphat was king. God’s people were soon to be overwhelmed by a vast army, one that was far too powerful for them to defeat. As the enemy closed in, the people began to panic. Jehoshaphat led the assembly in heart felt prayer before the Lord. He closed the prayer with these words:  “For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12

When the situation became so dire that there were no other answers, finally God’s people thought of turning to Him. We must admit, that does sound familiar, doesn’t it?

God responds, speaking through a Levite among them: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 2 Chronicles 20:15

God told them to gather their soldiers together and to march down against this terrifying enemy. He would be with them, that was His promise. Jehoshaphat responded with an amazing act of faith: After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, singing: “Give thanks to the Lord,
    for his love endures forever.”
2 Chronicles 20:21

It must have been quite a picture. The army of Judah, such as it was, marching out to do battle with a foe of overwhelming size. At the head of the assembly, the place where normally your most fierce and capable warriors would  be, Jehoshaphat placed the choir.

What was the most important detail of that fateful day in the mind of Jehoshaphat, the king? That they worship God with all their heart.

Worship would be the key to victory. Singing praises to the King of Kings would be the most important and effective tactic they could employ.

This is true today as well. We face an enemy that at times seems too great and powerful. But the battle belongs to the Lord! Let us worship well and give praise to Him who brings the victory!
