Good morning. When we read the words of Paul in the New Testament, we occasionally see references to a young man named Timothy. Timothy’s story is an interesting one. He was the son of a Greek father and a Jewish mother. He was from the region of Derbe and Lystra, and it is likely that he first heard Paul speak during the apostle’s first missionary journey which traveled through that area. He would have been 17-18 years of age at that time. His father is never mentioned in connection to Christian faith, and may have been opposed to the commitment to Christ from his wife and son.
Paul addressed two letters to Timothy. It is clear that the young man had become Paul’s protégée and a mighty warrior for Christ in his own right. The 2nd letter to Timothy begins: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,
To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Guard the deposit entrusted to You. I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.
When Paul writes to the church at Philippi, we learn a little more about Paul’s reliance on this young man: I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. I have no one else like him, someone who will show genuine concern for your welfare. For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.
I am writing about Timothy as a thought for today because I wonder if we are seizing every opportunity to mentor and guide the young people around us in the name of the Lord? How many powerful servants of Christ have had their beginning through the special interest and instruction of a Christian adult they have met? Words shared and time spent, certainly the prayers offered on their behalf, may all prove to be powerful and effective in inspiring that young girl or boy to grow into a servant of Christ.
Such efforts go beyond family boundaries, although including parents whenever possible is absolutely the right thing to do.
Timothy changed the world around him for Christ. He was one of the most powerful and effective of all early church leaders. If Paul hadn’t extended a hand of friendship and encouragement to him who knows what may have happened with his life.
Befriend and encourage the young people around you. Lift up the joy of Christian service. Withhold complaints and criticism, especially of other people. Be a beacon, a voice of encouragement, and a splendid example. And always pray, pray, pray.
