Good morning. Have a fun, healthy, joyful fourth of July!
We recognize July 4th as Independence Day. But as Christians, every day is Independence Day because, as Paul says in 2 Corinthians 3:17: “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
When we learn to trust God and the Spirit of God dwells within us, we are, as Christian people, free. Free from fear, anxiety, addictions, doubt and limitations. We are released from the chains of sin that once bound us. Because of this freedom, we are able to live our lives in power and be the best that God intends for us to be.
Sometimes the hardest thing about being free in Christ is to accept the reality of that truth. Is it really possible that every failure, every mistake, every rebellious act, every excursion into sin, all of it is cast away and remembered no more? Is it possible to be set free when we are so undeserving? In the words of Jesus, Mark 10:27, “And Jesus looking upon them said, with men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”
Jesus says, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30That is a promise of freedom!
As Americans, we are blessed to live in a country where we can enjoy our freedom. We are free to work, worship, learn and live. Let us praise God for such freedom! But we must also be mindful of our spiritual independence and freedom. May we live in the Spirit to make each moment count and bask in our unbridled freedom to be all that God intends for us to be.
