Forever, I will Sing  12-10-23

Good morning. I pray that your worship this Day of our Lord will be sweet and filled with love. May our songs of worship be love songs to the Lord.

What is your favorite love song? I would think that we all could make a list. It would be personal, and it would be unique because to say that such a list is subjective is beyond question. From my era a song from the Beatles like “Something”; or “God Only Knows” from the Beach Boys; and “I Will Always Love You”, which was written by Dolly Parton but made more famous by Whitney Houston make the cut, and how about “Hello” by Lionel Richie? Goodness, to mention all that are worthy would be a long list!

Just a bit before my time were songs from The Sultan of Swoon, Frank Sinatra. Any list of favorite love songs sung by Ol’ Blue Eyes would be long indeed.

It is hard for me to imagine quality love songs from the Rap genre, but I am sure that they are out there.

King David was an amazing musician. He played several instruments and apparently could sing with an amazing voice. But where he really stood out was as a composer. Many of the Psalms were written by David and many of those he composed were love songs. David didn’t write his love songs for Bathsheba or other women, at least not that I am aware. He wrote those songs for the true love of his life: the Lord God Almighty. David composed and performed love songs for God.

The 89th Psalm shares the truth of King David’s heart, although it is a song written about David’s love songs to the Lord. Psalm 89 is written by Ethan the Ezrahite, and begins:

I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.
  I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
  You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant,
  ‘I will establish your line forever
    and make your throne firm through all generations.’”

David’s heart of love for God was well known. That David would sing of the Lord’s great love forever was a truth no one could argue against.

How wonderful to be known for your love of the Lord. How extraordinary that those around us would know that songs of love for Him overflow from our heart at all times.

In worship today may the Love for the Lord fill your heart, be the substance of your song, be the intention of your praise. Yes, we will be singing songs with a Christmas theme. How fitting! For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son…  That sounds like a Christmas love song to me.
