For the Beauty 11-30-22

Good morning. I suppose that it depends largely on what the plan is for the day ahead, but most of us have, from time to time, gone out of our way to look our best. Perhaps it is early morning, and you are getting ready for work. Maybe you have a dinner plan that includes dressing up a bit. Or it could be that you are getting ready for church, and you  spend a little more time and effort on choosing your wardrobe and on personal grooming.

There are times when we want to look our best. Now for some good news: all who are a part of God by uniting with Him through Jesus Christ have a special beauty secret.

We know about many wonderful attributes of our heavenly Father, but how beautiful is God? Isaiah 33:17 reminds us that when we see Him, the King, we will see Him in His beauty. Several verses and passages of scripture, especially throughout the Psalms, remark on the glory, the majesty, and the incredible beauty of God.

OK, God is beautiful, no doubt about it, but what does that have to do with me?

Consider the promise of Psalm 90:17 May the beauty of the Lord our God rest upon us; as He establishes the work of our hands; yes, as He establishes the work of our hands.

Some translations try to run from this idea, that God’s personal beauty rests upon us. They translate the word for beauty as “favor”, or even as “kindness”. But the Hebrew word is clear, and it should be translated as either “beauty” or as “loveliness”.

Should we be uncomfortable with the idea that the beauty, the loveliness of the Creator who is our Heavenly Father, should come to rest upon His children?
Why? What is unusual about kids taking after their parents?

Let’s be clear, God’s beauty isn’t limited to physical appearance. I would suppose that the beauty that is being promised in Psalm 90:17 is a loveliness that runs far deeper than how He would look to us.

The clue may be given in the rest of the verse, that He establishes the work of our hands.

We are beautiful in the Lord when we are His. We are beautiful in the Lord when our actions are in keeping with His will for us. But know this: through your relationship with the Lord your God, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Lift your head up today, let the world around you admire the beauty, for the beauty of the King rests upon you!
