Good morning. There is smart, and then there is wise. I have heard it said that the difference is that being smart means that you know things, that you have in your head a generous amount of information. To be wise is not to merely know things, it is to know how to put any and all of that information to proper, and godly, use.
In matters of faith there is definitely a difference between knowledge and wisdom. The primary difference is that knowledge comes to us through our commitment and effort, while wisdom comes to us from God. Please consider these words about wisdom:
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. James 3:15
How much better to get wisdom than gold!
To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver. Proverbs 16:16
Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”. 1 Corinthians 3:18-19
The value of wisdom is made clear, as is the nature of godly wisdom. The difference between the “wisdom” of this world and the true wisdom which comes only from God is plain to see. We should note in that last passage that we may need to accept that to appear as “fools” by the standards of this world may be required in order to embrace the true wisdom flowing from the heart of God. What this world thinks is wise God may see as foolishness.
As for how we are to acquire such blessings, that first verse from James 1:5 tells us: value wisdom enough to include the request for it in your prayer life. Not once in a while, but often. Because if you are like me, we need God’s wisdom every day!
God bless you with His wisdom!
