Good morning. Have you ever gone to a restaurant and found the service to be less than you had expected? Perhaps the waiter or waitress was having a bad day. Perhaps they hated their job and should be doing something else. Perhaps their heart is not one willing to serve, so they simply don’t understand the concept. Whatever the reason, it is disappointing and has a negative impact on the dining experience.
However, waiters and waitresses typically do their best to serve you. They greet you with a smile. They apologize if you were required to wait for seats. They say things like “Hello, my name is Chris and I will be your server today. Please, if you have any questions or if there is anything that I can do for you, don’t hesitate to ask.” They ask about beverages, inquire whether you might appreciate an appetizer, they are friendly, helpful, and courteous. They are easy to tip because you know they did their best and earned your appreciation. Perhaps the bottom line is that they recognize completely who is the one whose role it is to serve, and who it is that is to be served.
What is your heart and spirit as you come to worship? Do you immediately recognize who it is who is to be served and who it is who should have the attitude and spirit of service?
“Dear God, I am delighted to be with you today!” “Oh, my wonderful Lord, how may I best please you today?” “My sweet Savior, I know that this is all about you and not about me, please forgive the times I have forgotten that and did not come to you ready to serve you.”
The Psalmist begins Psalm 95 with these words:
1 Oh come, let us sing to the Lord!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
He continues in verses 6-7
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
7 For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep]of His hand.
As you worship the Lord today, please do so with a heart of service. It is your role, even as it is your joy.
