Good morning. We read in John chapter 9 of the events surrounding Jesus’ healing of a man who had been blind from birth. The disciples asked Him “Whose sin is the cause of this man being blind, was it this man’s sin or that of his parents?” John 9:2
We tend to have that attitude, don’t we? If we see someone struggling we assume that it is due to their own poor choices, or perhaps because of some evil of others that the person became swept up in?
Jesus’ response to their question is one that we should consider. “Neither this man nor his parents sinned (to cause his condition), said Jesus, but this happened so that the works of God may be displayed through him.”
What a wonderful perspective! The man wasn’t a victim of fate, nor was his situation caused by anyone’s spiritual failures; he was a miracle waiting to happen!
Jesus didn’t label him. Jesus didn’t pass him by without compassion or concern. Jesus helped him and healed him. Jesus’ healing went beyond the man’s physical vision, it healed his spiritual vision as well.
Jesus was far more concerned about the man’s future than He was about the man’s past. Another good model for us I believe.
We are told by Jesus in Matthew 7:1-2 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Imagine with me please what your day will be like if you look at others, and perhaps even take a peek at yourself, and see only someone who is ripe for a miracle to occur. Wouldn’t that be something, to see as God sees? Not to condemn, but to see with anticipation all that could be through the loving power of God.
