Good morning. The setting was Jesus speaking one on one with a sinner. She had an interesting, perhaps even tragic life. She was ashamed of her life and was doing what she could to remain away from her peers lest she suffer those looks of reproach, ridicule, and condemnation. We know her as the Samaritan woman that Jesus met at Jacob’s well. He was weary from His journey, and she was coming to the well alone and at the wrong time of day to draw water. Drawing water was typically a social event among the women of a town, but she was a sinner and looked down upon, so she preferred to do her task in the heat of the day, alone. But then she met Jesus.
John 4 tells her story, and verses 23-26 speak truths that we continue to dwell upon today, for they are words of power and of truth.
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
The hour that Jesus spoke of is here, and it has been here throughout our lifetimes. The Holy Spirit of God is within us. The Word of God is ours to read and to remember. The presence of Jesus Christ is real to all who will open their hearts to Him. It is time.
true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth… May we take possession of those words with all our heart today and worship Him in spirit and in truth.
For nothing else is worthy and nothing else will do. Worship well today beloved of Christ Jesus.
