Good morning. Tomorrow is the day for that great American event, the Super Bowl. It comes but once a year, much to the sadness of some and the relief of others.
For such a contest we can be sure that each person participating will do their best. There will be nothing left out, no energy unspent, no efforts ungiven.
When it is over the victors will enjoy a parade and the defeated will weep for having come so close only to be denied. The fans of one team will be ecstatic while the fans of the other team will be sure that the refs are a bunch of idiots, probably crooked as well.
And in a matter of hours the attention that was directed at the contest will be devoted elsewhere, and some will begin to count the days until baseball season begins.
Grantland Rice said this in ALUMNUS FOOTBALL:
For when the One Great Scorer comes
To write against your name,
He writes—not that you won or lost—
But how you played the game.
Much of scripture is devoted to telling us how to best live our lives, and what it takes to be truly victorious. The apostle Paul, writing to his young friend Timothy, gives this description of his life, which I think serves as advice from the Lord:
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8
What a wonderful testimony to the victory that is ours in Christ!
Enjoy the big game, if that is of interest to you. For all of us, enjoy the hope and thrill of victory, today and every day!
