Good morning. Flirt, that is a word that may drag up a variety of thoughts and memories. I suppose there are a few differing definitions, but I think of a flirt as someone who wants to get the amusement ,excitement, and entertainment out of the simple hints of love without giving any thought to the commitment that a deeper expression of love might bring.
I would suggest that it may be true of some people that they flirt with God.
That thought suggests that such people are happy to enjoy the occasional thrill of faith, the limited investment of shallow interest in God’s people, and the brief warmth in their heart which comes from standing close to the flame of Christ, but all without genuine intentions to let the love of Christ rule in their lives.
This is a shame, even a tragedy.
Superficial love for Christ is no love at all. It is a sham, a falsehood, an impersonation.
Reflect with me please the words given to us in Romans 12:1-2.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
There is nothing superficial about those words. Those words urge us to move into a deeper and more honest relationship with our Savior Jesus. Those words tell us to set aside the desire to safely “flirt” with faith and to allow the fullness of spiritual change to occur. Those words challenge us to take part in what happens whenever genuine and powerful love is present. When powerful love is present there is transformation.
This is true in every relationship that we enjoy. When love is present in power, it is a transforming force in our lives.
Perhaps it is a good day to consider whether our love of Jesus is a flirtation or a force.
Love well today!
