The One You Feed 02-01-2023

Good morning. There is an illustration that is often told, with degrees of variation. The most common way it is related is as an old proverb of Native Americans. The story is of a grandfather who describes to his grandson a battle that is always raging between two wolves. One wolf represents all that is good and righteous, the other all that is wrong and evil. It is clear to the boy that the grandfather is speaking of the inner struggles that take place in all people. The boy asks, “Who wins”? The grandfather replies, “The one that you feed will always win”.

This is a truth that is taught through the Word of God. We are always in the midst of conflict within. There is a voice that tempts us with all that is worldly, but not right. There is another voice, the voice of the Spirit of God speaking to us, encouraging us to do what is best and righteous. Day by day the battle goes on, but which voice wins? “The one that you feed” will win in the end…every time.

Please consider this passage from 1Thessalonians 5:16-22. The passage provides, I believe, an excellent model, telling us how to “feed” what is right.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.Do not quench the Spirit.Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good.Abstain from every form of evil.

This is voiced to us as a group of essential commands, and I think that if we obey them, we will find ourselves well nourished in the ways we want to be nourished and malnourished in the ways that need to be pushed away.

Be well nourished today.
