Good morning. Being washed by the blood is an idea that takes some getting used to. Something of which we are all well aware is that blood does an excellent job of staining, but no one would ever consider using it as a cleansing agent.
No one but God.
When God set His law among His people, the Israelites, He made it clear that the blood belonged to Him. The people were not to use it for any purpose, not the blood of humans or animals, no purpose other than worship. In their ceremonies of worship, the blood had an important role. The blood always pointed to the payment required for sin. The blood always pointed to the reality that while the blood of bulls, goats, and lambs could “set aside” the reality of sin for a time, it would be the blood of the perfect Lamb of God, His Anointed One, our Messiah that would pay the price so that sin is forgiven and remembered no more. It would be His blood, and only His blood, that would cleanse us.
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:7-9
This cleansing is not a promise for the future, it is a reality of the present. Let a speck of dust, the tiniest dot of sin, fall on your soul, and it is washed away. Let a spot of filth fall on the heart of God’s child, and the blood of Christ wipes it away.
Our Savior gazes down upon those dark moments and failures that enter our lives. But rather than fall back in disgust, He reaches out in loving kindness and says, “Here, let me take care of you. My blood will clean that for you if you will only ask”.
