Good morning. I smile when I see those sayings written on little signs to hang about. They are often witty and clever. I like the one that says “I tried dusting once, but it all came back. I’m not falling for that again!”
There are jobs that we all need to take care of on a regular basis. Some are not too difficult, although they may seem to be a bit tedious. Others are genuinely unpleasant, and we tend to put them off for as long as we can.
Mosaic Law required that the Jewish people bring daily sacrifices before the Lord. These sacrifices were intended to keep the need of dealing with sin constantly in the minds of God’s people. Imagine the gallons of blood spilled at the altar through the years. These sacrifices were required by God’s Law, but they never could achieve the desired goal. No amount of blood spilled from lambs, goats, and bulls could ever remove the sin of the people. But God always had a plan: Every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Hebrews 10:11-18
In one moment of perfection, God’s Lamb paid the price for us all. With His single sacrifice the price was paid and the need for blood ended. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
Note that it doesn’t say that in that single offering he improved our situation. With His single sacrifice our fortunes didn’t turn in a positive direction. He didn’t enhance, He completed all that was required.
By the blood of Jesus, by His perfect, single sacrifice, our sins are cast away and remembered no more. Once, for all time, His single sacrifice means our eternal victory.
Praise God!
